So, the original plan was to get on the I40 in Albuquerque, till Milanand get on the old Route 66 from there, all the way to Needles.

We’d spend the first night in the Wigwam motels in Holbrook and the second night in Williams, the third night in Kingman, then do the last leg to Needles and then back home on the I40.

But that was before Scott blew a tire on the I40 and then another one upon hitting the ditch. Four new tires, $400, that set us back considerably in our travel budget. All things considering, we are grateful that nothing more serious happened to him and the car is okay and we were long overdue for tires anyway, after all the Katrina relocation trips. As Scott said, this could have happened in the middle of the desert or fully loaded with all of us.

So, the new plan is to take the I40 to Gallup and “do” everything between Gallup and Holbrook. We will still spend the night in Holbrook, because my son would never forgive me if we did not. I have mede the reservations by phone and I will confirm them this afternoon.

For the second night I booked us in the Motel 6 in Williams. After that, what happens depends on the budget: either another night or we head back home….

So it will be: Gallup, crossing the state line and on to Lupton. See the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest, onto Holbrook. Next day Holbrook to Winslow, visit the Meteor Crater, Two Guns, Canyon Diablo, Twin Arrows, onto Winona, Flagstaff and onto Williams.
